Piaggio conrod bearings are available in four different sizes.
Nowadays these are identified by the colour of the bearing cage (in the past the bearing had line markings). The crankshaft also has a matching marking with one, two, three or four lines.
The large engines with 16mm piston pins (180-200cc) always use opposite markings, i.e. a connecting rod with one line receives a category four bearing. In total this should always result in five for the 16mm bearings.

 

The categories have been replaced by a color system in the meantime, as mentioned above.

The larger the category, the more oversize the bearing has.
I.e. a bearing of category four sits very tightly, a bearing of category one has a lot of play. Therefore most 200cc Piaggio crankshafts are delivered with a category one (copper) or two (blue) bearing.

example: A 200cc crankshaft with two marks on the connecting rod gets a silver bearing.
A shaft with two markings on the connecting rod and a high mileage with rattling noises from the piston or noticeable radial play receives a ‘tighter’ silver bearing (Cat. III). Ideally, the marking on the connecting rod head should be extended by one line to maintain the system for subsequent screwdrivers.

TIP: The piston pin is mounted with ‘zero’ installation clearance. The removal clearance is 0.02mm. This means that the pin should ideally fit into the bearing by suction and be easily rotatable in the bearing with two fingers. Crosswise to the axle it should have no play.

Due to the not always comprehensible product changes at Piaggio, different conrod bearing colors can also be installed in the crankshaft (green, black).
Here the correct bearing can only be found by trial and error.
